Jennifer Baldwin is contributions editor at The Bakersfield Californian. Baldwin started at The Bakersfield Californian in 2003. Since then she has held the roles of multimedia editor and features writer before becoming the contributions editor in early 2007. Before working at The Bakersfield Californian, she was a reporter at The Modesto (CA) Bee. Baldwin began her career in journalism as a features intern at The Sacramento Bee in 1997. In 2006, Baldwin received the Publisher’s Excellence Award. She is currently the vice president of the Kern Press Club. Baldwin received a journalism degree from California State University, Sacramento, and went on to receive a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley.

Mark Bickel is digital editor at The Fort Myers (FL) News-Press/news-press.com. Bickel’s career with The News-Press started in October 2004 as the sports editor. He first began reporting about sports for the Poughkeepsie (NY) Journal, later becoming an assistant sports editor and eventually a sports editor for the Journal. Bickel received a Newsroom Supervisor Recognition Award from Gannett, as well as a Society for News Design Award of Excellence. He served as vice-chairman for The Associated Press Sports Editors in the Northeast Region, and was a member of the Golf Writers Association of America and Metropolitan Golf Writers Association. He received a bachelor of science in communications management and a master of arts in public relations from the Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.

Jan Boyd is executive producer of new media at NBC11 (KNTV). Her career with KNTV began in 2001 as the special projects producer. Boyd has had an active career in multimedia, having worked as a multimedia consultant for Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, as well as co-founder and chief creative officer of Red Zeppelin Digital and a senior technology producer at KRON TV. Boyd is an Emmy and Telly award winner, received a Friends of Northern California Booksellers Award for creating a unique cross platform project featuring Bay Area bookstores, and a Camp Roberts Maneuver Training Center Certificate of Appreciation. Boyd is a member of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, Online News Association and Young Leaders Society, and has a bachelor of arts in international studies from the University of Washington.

Cassie Carothers began her career as an editor 2002. Recently, Carothers began working as the senior online editor/reporter for the NYPost.com, and prior to this was news editor for FOXNews.com, business editor for Metro, associate editor for Wall Street Transcript and copy editor for Dayton Daily News. Carothers received a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Miami University where she acted as editor in chief of the Miami Student newspaper.

Mark Coatney is the projects editor at Newsweek where he is responsible for the creation and running of all of Newsweek’s blogs. Prior to Newsweek, Coatney held the roles of deputy managing editor and news editor at Time.com. Before transitioning to the Web, Coatney was a writer/editor at Time Inc. He is a member of the Online News Association. Coatney attended the University of Kansas, where he received a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in political science.

Daniel Day has been the managing editor at The Modesto (CA) Bee since 2005. Day previously had a long career with The Associated Press as a reporter, editor and executive from 1981 until 2004 in several bureaus and at New York headquarters. He is a member and past president of the California First Amendment Coalition and formerly a member of the California Society of Newspaper Editors, Radio and Television News Directors Association and the New Jersey Press Association. Day received a master’s degree in journalism from Marquette University and a bachelor’s degree in the classics from the College of the Holy Cross.

Joellen Easton is public insight analyst at American Public Media’s Center for Innovation in Journalism, where she works on Citizen Sourcing at Marketplace. Easton is a member of The Society of Environmental Journalists and The Society for Applied Anthropology. She has an undergraduate degree from Tufts University in anthropology with a minor in music and African studies and studied at the University of Ghana for one semester. Easton has a master’s degree in comparative media studies from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Michelle Ferrier Ph.D. is managing editor of MyTopiaCafe.com, an online community hub that represents Volusia and Flagler counties in Florida. In addition,she writes a column for The Daytona Beach (FL) News-Journal called “Chasing Rainbows.” She was a research associate at the digital media department at the University of Central Florida, and spent five years as an Assistant Professor at Emory and Henry College’s Mass Communications Department. Ferrier is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, the Digital Journalism Task Force, the Modern Language Association and the American Folklore Society. Ferrier holds a doctorate in texts and technology, a master’s degree in journalism and a bachelor of science in journalism from the University of Central Florida.

Ron Gonzales is senior team leader at The Orange County (CA) Register. Gonzales has held many titles since he began working with the Register in 1992. He was editor/team leader of Excelsior Spanish-language newspaper, which is published by the Register, and was the team leader for north-central Orange County news coverage, and the breaking news editor/social issues editor. Gonzales was a former board member, statewide officer, and founding chapter president of the inland chapter of the California Chicano News Media Association, and a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. Cory Haik is the senior producer of interactivity and projects at seattletimes.com. Before seattletimes.com, she was the managing editor of NOLA.com, an online affiliate of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans from 2000 to 2007. In joint coverage with Times-Picayune, at NOLA.com Haik was part of the online news team awarded a Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News and Public Service of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. In addition, she is a recipient of the Online Journalism Award for Breaking News, the 2005 Knight-Batten Award for Public Service for her Web site’s blog “Cries for Help,” which provided real-time aid to victims in need of rescue during Hurricane Katrina, as well as a recipient of the New Orleans Press Club Award for Breaking News and Internet Innovation. Haik received a bachelor of arts in mass communication from Nicholls State University and a master’s degree in communication theory from the University of New Orleans.

Robert Hopwood is community news content producer for SignOnSanDiego.com, which is the San Diego (CA) Union-Tribune’s Web site. Prior to this, he was a news content producer at McClatchy Interactive, a production coordinator for The Insider, a niche publication of the Raleigh News and Observer, and an associate editor for CNN Interactive. Allen Houston is the assistant managing editor at The Dallas (TX) Morning News. Two years ago, Houston helped launch a weekly user-generated section of the paper that allowed residents to share stories and photos about their neighborhoods and surrounding suburbs. Houston has since turned this into a social-networking Web site called neighborsgo.com. He was honored as the editor of “Windmill” College Literary Magazine. He has a bachelor’s degree in English and creative writing from the University of Oklahoma, as well as an ESL degree from the New World Teacher’s Institute in San Francisco.

Deedra Lawhead is online editor at Lexington (KY) Herald-Leader. Lawhead has been the online editor since August 2004, but her career with the Herald-Leader began in 2000 as the city editor and then later as health and education editor. She is a recipient of the Green Eyeshade Award for Excellence in Journalism, having received first place for her deadline reporting coverage of the crash of Flight 5191, a story which also earned her a National Headliner Award. Lawhead is a member of the Online News Association, International Webmasters Association and HTML Writers Guild. Kristin Volk is the director and anchor of online video news at United Press International. Prior to UPI, she worked for Potomac Television as a reporter and producer and at WTVG 13 ABC in her hometown of Toledo, OH. In 2003, she worked at ABC Primetime and 20/20 where she and her colleagues won a CNBC Golden Eagle for ABC Primetime’s “Witness: The Children of Waco.” She is a member of the Online News Association and the Society of Professional Journalists.
