Jane Ellen Stevens is director of media strategies at The World Company in Lawrence, KS, where she is leading the development of a niche news structure that integrates social media into its DNA. She has been a science/technology/health journalist for 30 years. As editorial director of Oceans Now, she led the team that created the ocean science niche news sites TOPP.org and the Great Turtle Race 2007. She taught at UC Berkeley's Graduate School of Journalism and was the co-creator of the Knight Digital Media Center's Multimedia Boot Camp training program. She has done consulting with news organizations, including the San Diego Union-Tribune, the Ventura County Star, the Oakland Tribune and National Public Radio. For four years, she lived and worked in Kenya and Indonesia, and has been to Antarctica three times on reporting fellowships. She's written for several magazines, including National Geographic. She is co-director of the Violence Reporting Project, which encourages news organizations to take a solution-oriented approach to crime reporting.
