Jody Brannon is the national director of the Carnegie-Knight News21 journalism initiative. A former newspaper and magazine writer and editor in her native Seattle, she began her digital journalism career in April 1995 with washingtonpost.com, rising to managing editor and executive producer. For nearly five years she was executive producer at USATODAY.com and served for almost two years as ombudsman and director of experimental programming at MSN.com. Brannon's 1999 University of Maryland dissertation, "Maximizing the Medium," examined online journalism at ABC, NPR and USA Today; a summary was recently included in "Making Online News: The Ethnography of New Media Production." She is chair of the Knight-Batten Awards for Innovations in Journalism and sits on the board of the Online News Association, chairing the education committee. She recently has been named to the advisory board of the forthcoming online journal, convergent journalism and is contributing a chapter to the "2010 Pfieffer Annual Leadership Development" series. Brannon now lives in Phoenix, Ariz. where she enjoys reading mysteries, lazing in the sun, in-line skating, racquetball and bicycling to work.
