WellCommons, a local health news site in Lawrence, Kansas, recently won an EPPY award from Editor & Publisher for “Best Community Service on a Media-Affiliated Website with under 250,000 unique monthly visitors”. Thank you, judges! With this post, I’ll explain why we nominated WellCommons, which is part of the Lawrence Journal-World, and why I think it’s a proof-of-concept for what Clay Shirky, Jay Rosen and Jeff Jarvis have been preaching about news and community.

Journal Register Company Editor-in-Chief Jim Brady says the change seeks to “fundamentally change the way the Register newsroom operates” while demonstrating that “you can address the needs of traditional journalism while still reorienting your newsroom toward the future.” A new reorganization creates investigative/depth, engagement and breaking news teams.
