Knight Community Information Challenge: Applications open May 1

by: Amy Gahran |

Open government is the focus of this year's Knight Community Information Challenge. On May 1, the day applications open, the Knight Foundation is holding a webinar where you can get answers to your questions about this contest, which provides matching grants in partnership with community foundations to fund community information and engagement projects.

According to the KCIC FAQ, this year: "The Challenge will provide up to $50,000 in seed funding to community and place-based foundations as a way to test new ideas. While the Challenge is an open call for all kinds of ideas, preference will be given to open government projects, an area in which we see great promise."

Also: "Our definition [of open government] is broad: We are looking for projects that improve the way that people and governments interact."

(Sound familiar? Yes, this year's first Knight News Challenge also is focusing on open government. Those finalists have been selected, and News Challenge winners will be announced June 25. Until then, anyone can rate or comment on the 40 finalist entries.)

Got questions about the Knight Community Information Challenge? If you're considering entering the KCIC, the Knight Foundation will conduct a virtual Q&A via webinar on May 1 at 1pm ET. This is a chance to get your questions answered and gain more insight into this contest. Register for the webinar.

Deadline for KCIC submissions: June 1. Learn more about KCIC.
