One in three U.S. adults owns a tablet, says Pew
Is your community news or information tablet friendly? With astounding speed, tablets have become a significant part of the mobile media landscape. It's been just three years since the first iPad hit the market, and now one third of U.S. adults now owns a tablet computer, according to a new report from Pew Internet.
In Tablet Ownership 2013, Pew notes that tablet ownership among U.S. adults has nearly doubled in just the last year alone.
Making your content tablet-friendly might be a powerful way to reach non-youth community members today. About half of all adults aged 35-44 report owning a tablet -- the highest level of tablet penetration for any age group studied by Pew. People aged 45-54 and 25-34 lag slightly behind, at about 38% each. Surprisingly, adults 18-24 (normally tech early adopters) had one of the lowest rates of tablet penetration, (33%) -- trailed only by those aged 55 and over. There were no significant racial or gender disparities for tablet ownership.
Wealth is another strong predictor of tablet ownership -- 56% of adults in households earning over $75,000 per year own a tablet, compared to just 38% for those earning between $50,000-$75,000.
But lurking behind Pew's statistics about adults may be a fast-growing audience of young tablet users. Pew found that parents are especially likely to own tablets: half of adults who live with minor children own a tablet, compared to just 27% of other adults. Consider this a portent of things to come -- today, lots of kids are growing up with tablets, indicating that in coming years this could comprise a majority of the mobile media audience.
Responsive web design that includes break points for common large and small tablet display sizes, making ample use of attractive images and video, and navigation and interactivity that are touchscreen friendly and require little typing, are some of the easiest ways to make your digital content and services tablet-friendly.
