Scripps buys Newsy: More focus on local news video likely

by: Amy Gahran |

Today E.W Scripps Co. announced it's buying, for $35 million, Newsy.

Newsy is a mobile-friendly news video service that lets users to compare news sources from around the world to see how a story unfolds. With this acquisition, Scripps will likely start applying video news comparison to the local level, across the 19 Scripps television stations and newspapers in 13 U.S. markets.

TechCrunch observes that this deal will also give Scripps "access into an audience that consumes their news (and video) on devices like tablets, and has largely turned away from some of those more traditional platforms where Scripps still bases a majority of its business."

This will be an interesting move to watch -- particularly whether, under Scripps, Newsy might also start including video content from smaller, independent community news and engagement efforts.
