Knight News Challenge awards focus on open Internet, access and rights

by: Melissa Kaplan |

The Knight Foundation has announced the winners to the Knight News Challenge under the theme of an open Internet. A total of $3.4 million has been awarded to 19 projects, with nine grants between $200,000 and $500,000, and $35,000 each to separate works under the Knight Prototype Fund.

Among the grants receiving larger chunks of funding are library-centered works. The Chicago Public Library will instigate “Internet to Go” with the goal of increasing engagement in low-Internet zones. A $400,000 award will go to testing Wi-Fi hotspots and providing laptops, tablets and digital skills coaching.

The Digital Public Library of America is receiving $300,000 for “Getting it Right on Rights” to help create a universal structure and understanding on our rights when accessing content on huge Internet archives. The project will include two international summits, gathering leaders in the fields of policymaking and intellectual property.
