Deadline approaching for round 2 of INNovation Fund

by: Melissa Kaplan |

Public media organizations and purveyors of nonprofit digital news have until Sept. 2 to apply for grants of up to $35,000 in the second round of the INNovation Fund, offered by the Investigative News Network and supported by the Knight Foundation. This program supports projects that focus on sustainability, increasing audience engagement and growing diverse streams of revenue.

Download the application. Deadline: Tuesday, Sept. 2, midnight PST.

The two-part application includes a budget proposal and application form. You'll have to supply your tax-exempt status and your company or your sponsor company's EIN. All projects must be a part of a 501(c)(3) and based in the U.S.

Eligible projects may involve coordinating events, building apps or other technology, developing a data network, growing a sales team or fostering audience membership. A total of $1 million will be granted over two years, with each grantee averaging about $25,000.

Content projects are also considered if they meet the goals of audience engagement and revenue-building. In first round of awards, granted in April with eight winners receiving $236,280, Public Herald successfully funded the tour supporting its investigative documentary "Triple Divide," which covers some of the negative impacts of hydraulic fracturing. The group's screening and discussion tours have increased Public Herald membership by 220% in less than one year.
