Over the past month, we've reviewed finalists of this year's Online Journalism Awards doing work reflecting use of community engagement or diving deeply into a local story. Some of these finalists were among the winners. Independent journalist and cartoonist Susie Cagle won in the Online Commentary - Small category for her piece exploring the employment and commuter numbers influencing wealth disparities in San Francisco, breaking down the story of rising importance in a colorful light. The Texas Tribune won in the Planned News Events / Small category for "31 Days, 31 Ways:" a month's worth of stories, laid out in August, educating readers on a number of bills leading up to a crucial September vote.

The Knight Lab Project's powerful Publisher's Toolbox won the Gannett Foundation Award for Technical Innovation in the Service of Digital Journalism, receiving $5,500 to further develop applications that are quite helpful to small and mid-sized sites. Peruse the tools here.
