Knight Cities Challenge: $5 million in grants to foster successful cities
The Knight Foundation has announced the Knight Cities Challenge: a competition to distribute grants totalling $5 million for projects that seek to foster successful cities. This Challenge is open to digital media, journalism and info projects -- as well as any idea to support a successful city (planning, transportation, education, etc.).
The competition is focused on the 26 Knight communities -- a U.S. list that includes large cities such as Philadelphia and Detroit, as well as smaller cities such as Long Beach, Calif. and Boulder, Colo. Applicants need not be from these cities; but applications in these cities will be found for winning ideas.
Community projects that have competed against large news outlets in other media challenges may feel encouraged to participate, as a range of different projects are being accepted.
While the definition of success is open to interpretation, Knight believes that talent, opportunity, and engagement are key factors to bringing success to a city. Cities draw talent from college graduates, which raise per capita income; opportunity is extended to motivated urbanites from diverse backgrounds; and engagement gives a nod to the momentum behind great ideas, seeing them manifest from thoughtful actions.
Enter the Challenge beginning Oct. 1.
Deadline: Nov. 14.
