OJA winners announced this weekend

The winners of the 2014 Online Journalism Awards will be announced this weekend at the ONA Conference and Online Journalism Banquet in Chicago. Ten awards come with cash prizes; a total of $52,500 is available.
The awards will be live-streamed here on Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. CT.

Last month, we reviewed some of the community sites and independent contributors being considered for awards, including Oakland's Police Beat and independent journalist and artist Susie Cagle. Other community-oriented projects are also up for recognition. Running in the Feature -- Small category is KUT Austin's On My Block Tumblr, sourcing information from Austin residents block by block to see what issues District One cares most about. A tool that could be extremely helpful in future digital community news projects is up for $5,500 in the Gannett Foundation Award for Technical Innovation in the Service of Digital Journalism. Knight Lab Project's Publishers' Toolbox allows journalists and editors to create fluid timelines, produce inline audio, create maps, and help search Twitter effectively.
