Mayur Patel introduces a new assessment report reviewing the progress of the 2009 winners:
"[The report] included, among other things, new ways to visualize data, platforms for crowdsourcing and mapping, and toolkits for mobile media.
The News Challenge is Knight’s media innovation contest, designed to encourage experimentation with new ideas for gathering, sharing and using news and information. Among the 2009 winners, some projects have been highly successful and widely adopted, such as DocumentCloud, a tool for exploring and sharing primary source documents on the web. Predictably, not all the funded innovations have succeeded in gaining traction; such is the nature of open experimentation."
