Get ready for Give Local America Day, May 6: Knight updates Giving Day Playbook

by: Amy Gahran |

On May 6, community foundations around the U.S. will celebrate a century of local philanthropy through Give Local America Day. With less than a month before this event, there's still time to get started with your own Giving Day -- if you start now.

To help community foundations prepare, this week the Knight Foundation updated its Giving Day Playbook: a how-to guide with tips to plan a successful 24-hour online giving campaign.

Focused, 24-hour "Giving Day" campaigns have become a popular way for community foundations to raise funds, provide, leaderships, and engage new donors:

"A Giving Day is a powerful 24-hour online fundraising competition that unites a community around local causes. Hosted by the area's community foundation, the Giving Day raises money through a single online donation platform. A Giving Day is a great way to build community, connect donors to local nonprofits, teach organizations to use digital tools and generate excitement about your community foundation."

According to Knight, the updated Playbook includes specific tips on Giving Day issues such as crisis planning, recruiting and managing volunteers, involving donor-advised funds, and soliciting new nonprofit endowment funds.

Knight will continue to update the Playbook; stay tuned.
