Observing social technology's effects on civic life

by: Melissa Kaplan |

In a recent presentation to community foundation leaders, Lee Rainie (director of Pew Internet) explored current data on new media and information ecosystems. Using a series of slides, he reviewed an insightful chart of social media demographics (who uses Twitter and Facebook, and where they live), how people are using social media platforms, and how these networks have affected our attention span -- especially as it relates to civic information.

He also touched upon where social was heading: More tech power, better apps, new interfaces, and 3D and 4D printing.

His reference to an "Internet of Things" is worth exploring in a follow-up post on how wearable technology is set to thrive in the next 11 years.
