What does mobile engagement really mean? API report

by: Amy Gahran |

A new report from the American Press Institute offers nine recommendations for news publishers seeking to grow mobile revenue. One of these tackles a thorny question: What does it really mean to "engage" a mobile user?

Summarizing the consensus from an earlier API Thought Leader Summit on mobile news, "mobile engagement" can refer to any of these phenomena:

  • Contributing content from a mobile device.
  • Amplifying content.
  • Session-depth metrics.
  • Long-term loyalty.
  • Cross-platform interaction.
  • Financial contributions.

Tips for generating mobile engagement:

  • Think about the first-time user welcome.
  • Always offer a next story.
  • Create mobile-first (or mobile-equal) content.
  • Personalization of content.
  • Use push notifications in mobile apps.
  • Offer service-oriented tools.
  • Use technology features (such as GPS) built into the phone.
