Journalism education in the digital age: new edition of Knight resource
Last week at the Online News Association conference, the Knight Foundation debuted the second edition of Searchlights and Sunglasses, a free digital resource for journalism education education in the digital age.
Written by Eric Newton, Senior Advisor to Knight President Alberto Imbargüen, the new edition has been expanded with many new links and lessons.
In the year since its original publication, Newton has observed some progress in journalism education. "We see hopeful signs of change -- 'green shoots,' we are calling them. They take the form of new classes, projects, tracks and degrees. Indicators of hope include the number of members in Online News Association's Facebook group for journalism educators, which has almost doubled to more than 700. Even better, some 125 journalism schools (roughly a quarter of all schools and programs in the U.S.) applied for the Challenge Fund for Innovation in Journalism Education."
Oct. 29-30: the Reynolds Journalism Institute will host an event, Green Shoots in Journalism Education, showcasing several promising programs and projects. Register now to attend, or sign up to watch the live streamon Oct. 30.
The updated e-book also notes a Twitter hashtag, #edshift, used to convene discussion around activities of EducationShift (a new part of PBS MediaShift dedicated to moving journalism education forward).
