Webbmedia's digital media trends for 2015

by: Melissa Kaplan |

The digital strategy firm Webbmedia Group released its annual report on 55 technology trends that will affect media in 2015.

The report says news creators will begin looking directly at the reader's environment as they consume information over what device they're using: Are they waiting in line at a coffee shop? Sitting at work? Watching a screen while pumping gas? Content creators may ask questions like these and they are are currently being implemented by Google Now.

A growing trend of "indexing The Cloud" will bolster device agnosticism as readers can begin a story on mobile and continue it on their device at home or work. This data-synching mechanism has been successful with popular apps like Spotify, Pandora and Netflix, and could be powerful if implemented on a community or local level.

The report also predicts "One-to-Few Publishing,'' with a focus on niche publication in the coming year. This may be a bigger deal for brands, as some shift away from digital marketing to focus on their niche groups, but news publishers adept at this medium could begin publishing content as conversations, according to the report.

Privacy is a notable issue, with new social networks emerging in 2015 which promise greater protection of our data and communication. Among popular new offerings focusing on anonymity are WhisperSecret, and Yik Yak.

Net Neutrality will continue to be a blazing subject for the second year in a row as the Federal Communications Commission continues to debate the issue. The Federal Trade Commission will step in and take on a bigger role in regulating Internet fraud, the report predicts.

Another powerful trend is "Algorithm Ethics And Oversight," which considers technologies' sweeping use of algorithms and unwanted results of those left unchecked.
