New legal resources available for nonprofit news organizations

by: Melissa Kaplan |

The Reporter's Committee for Freedom of the Press, which offers support for journalists on topics such as media law and First Amendment rights, has partnered with the Investigative News Network to provide resources to INN members.

The RCFP, a nonprofit organization, works to protect the free press. The group first established itself in 1970 during a time when the government was challenging reporters and newsgathering, and still holds government accountability as a core part of its mission.

In addition to its INN partnership, the committee offers several PDF guides to help reporters navigate media law, including information on medical privacy law, government data access, and rights of the press when dealing with protestors and police. It also provides a free legal defense hotline, a 24-hour emergency line available to journalists and media lawyers. The group's many publications are also available.

The committee offers this work to journalists for free, with corporate, foundation, and donor support.

Beyond providing these resources to journalists, the committee is actively seeking out lawsuits challenging freedom of the press. In September, the committee hired its first litigation director to identify cases involving media rights.
