Mobile development and data analytics higher priorities for media companies

News publishers see top four priorities for the year ahead: Digital growth (94%), mobile development (93%), data analytics management (92%), and mobile revenue (91%), according to a survey of 285 U.S. and international news executives.
The survey results were presented at the International News Media Association World Congress meeting in New York by Earl J. Wilkinson, CEO of INMA, on May 11. The event drew more than 500 people from 41 countries. Nieman Lab shared the slides of Wilkinson's presentation.
Growing mobile revenue streams is the fastest growing priority with 69% of survey respondents describing it as “very crucial,” up from 63% in 2014 and 48% in 2013. Data analytics management also showed significant growth with 58% listing it as among their topic priories, up from 41% in 2013.
There was a significant drop in the percentage of publishers placing a priority on paywall development. The percentage fell to 27% saying payroll development was “absolutely crucial” from 48% in 2013. Since 2013, a large number of publishers have imposed paywalls or subscription models, which might be why development is now less of a priority but some publishers have dropped them and the idea may be losing its luster.
