A redo of the popular Timeline JS to give more flexibility to authors and developers

by: Nancy Yoshihara |

The new Timeline JS 3 is a full rewrite of Knight Lab’s most widely used tool and is available now to use. However, the new version is in “beta” until about September 2015, the target date for tweaking JS 3 to perfection.  Meanwhile, the original Timeline JS continues to be available.

“Once we're confident that there are no serious issues, we'll move this website to replace the current timeline.knightlab.com, so that everyone who makes new timelines will use the new software,” Knight Lab explains in its Roadmap for the revamped tool. “Don't worry: even when we do that, your existing timelines made with either the new or old version will continue to work, with no action required. Also, as we make improvements to Timeline JS 3, the timelines you make now will automatically take advantage of them.''

This is what is new in Timetime JS 3:

•   Flexible row layout: no longer limited to 3/6 rows.

•   Encapsulation: More than one timeline per page.

•   Support for very large time scales: dinosaurs! The Big Bang!

•   New media types: Dropbox images; DocumentCloud

•   Dropped support for Pagepeeker (screenshots of websites)

•   Developer features: cleaner architecture, unit tests, events.

Knight Labs at Northwestern University welcomes your feedback on their revamped timeline.
