NPR offers open source social media image tools for newsrooms

by: Nancy Yoshihara |

Brian Boyer, editor of the NPR visuals team, said the new tools - Quotable, Factlist and Waterbug - make it easy for news organizations to create "fashionable social graphics.”

An overview of the suite of new tools, first reported by Alastair Reid at journalism.co.uk, can be found on NRP Lunchbox at GitHub where you’ll find explanations, tips and source codes

Here’s a quick description of the kinds of images that can be created with these tools:

  • Quotable: Converts quoted text into a branded image.
  • Factlist: Produces a branded image with a list of items.
  • Waterbug: Creates a watermarked image with attribution.

Reid at journalism.co.uk provides an excellent run down with image examples of each of the three tools in his report.
