ABOUT

Mizell Stewart III, Managing Director/Content for Journal Media Group and a veteran news executive, developed the Four Platform Newsroom strategy and leads the initiative. Stewart led newsrooms in Florida, Ohio and Indiana before becoming Scripps VP/Content, Newspapers, in 2012. He is a member of the executive committee of the American Society of News Editors and is completing graduate study in executive leadership and organizational change at Northern Kentucky University.

The initiative was implemented in newsrooms in 13 markets. Newsroom staffing ranged from 18 at the San Angelo Standard Times in west central Texas to 77 at The (Memphis) Commercial Appeal in Tennessee.

KDMC brought significant experience in digital strategy, leadership and culture change to the partnership. Director Vikki Porter, a former top editor of several community newspapers, and senior program consultant Michele McLellan developed leadership training and coaching programs for more than 100 top editors of news organizations including NPR, PBS, The Boston Globe, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Seattle Times since 2006.

McLellan also had developed processes that instilled culture change in newsroom skills training programs for the Knight Foundation Newsroom Training Initiative in 2003-07. (McLellan is also the author of this report.)

KDMC training consultant Jerry Monti, formerly of the University of California Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism, added expertise in multimedia skills and social media best practice.
